ALA in NOLA = a good thing June 28, 2006
Posted by Laura Pearle in : ALA2006 , trackbackThe New York Times wrote about us, as did the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
And these are just some of the personal reflections from other librarians who were there:
Good work ALA!

My hearfelt thanks to all of you who came to my hometown for the ALA conference. I hope you had as much fun and excitement as the citizens of New Orleans had while you were here. Several weeks before the conference the buzz word in the city was “The librarians are coming!”
And you did..about 18,000!! The attendance was about par with ALA in Orlando and in New Orleans.
From the reports that I received all went well..the hotels and restaurants and convention center went out of their way to make ALA attendees feel at home. “thank you for coming” were the words often expressed to attendees everywhere they went. I know that some of the services may have taken a little longer, so thank you for your patience.
As I said in the pre-conference postings “You’ll love New Orleans and she’ll love you right back!”
Thanks….”New Orleans loves you!”

The librarians were there. It did not matter if you were on Bourbon Street, in a restaurant, or in a shop, the people of New Orleans asked if you were one of the librarians. When the response was yes, we were thanked repeatedly. The generosity and kindness of the resilient people of New Orleans will be part of my picture of the city. Fabulous food (I bought a cookbook) and wonderful music are also part of what I think of when I think of New Orleans. After years of reading about the French Quarter, it was everything I had imagined and more. The next time I visit, I have a list of historical sites I want to see. I wish I had seen New Orleans before Katrina, because it is still amazing. I will return.
