AASL in SL for NLW April 11, 2008

Join the party!   AASL is working to develop a presence on ALA Island in Second Life just in time to celebrate National Library Week during the week of April 13-19.

Our AASL Web 2.0 Taskforce forges ahead under the able SL leadership of committee members Lisa Perez and Robin Williams.  I am completely blown away by the creative talents of my virtual world colleagues!

Lisa and Robin are building information kiosks on ALA Island, investigating new ways to present our Standards for the 21st-Century Learner.  And they are planning to offer free AASL t-shirts for your avatars. (Be patient. These may not be ready in time for NLW.)

ALA and AASL members are encouraged to take part in the many festivities available throughout the week, including a maze and several parties (with fireworks).

Attend a storytime featuring School Library Media Month spokesperson Carmen Agra Deedy on Monday, April 14 at 4:30 PM SLT.

One highlight of the week will be Doug Johnson’s (http://doug-johnson.squarespace.com) presentation.  Doug is scheduled to speak on the main stage of ALA island on Monday night at 6 PM SLT (Pacific Time).

Doug’s speech, Beating the No U-Turn Syndrome: A New Approach to Teaching and Enforcing Copyright Compliance, will be followed by a breakout discussion.

Here’s an official description of Doug’s talk:

For too long librarians have been seen as “copyright cops,” impeding the use of copyrighted materials by students and staff. This presentation suggests we redefine our roles, helping those we serve take maximum advantage of fair use provisions, finding authorities with a “user-centric” view of copyright enforcement, and teaching others to consider not just the legal, but moral side of intellectual property acquisition, use and re-use. Heated discussion to follow.

To attend the big event:

  1. Go to www.secondlife.com and click on the orange button to create a free avatar account
  2. Verify that you will be using a computer that meets SL systems requirements found at http://secondlife.com/corporate/sysreqs.php.
  3. Download the client software at http://secondlife.com/support/downloads.php.
  4. Install the software on your computer and log onto SL using your avatar name and password
  5. If this is your first time in SL, log on well in advance of this program to go through the orientation activities that are provided by SL for new avatars.
  6. Then, on the day of the event, log on at least fifteen minutes in advance.  Use the SLURL http://slurl.com/secondlife/ALA%20Island/127/106/29 to teleport to the event.
  7. When you arrive, take a seat and then touch the notecard giver for further information.
  8. In this program, Doug Johnson will be using voice to communicate.  Make sure you are enabled for voice by clicking Editl -> Preferences -> Voice Chat -> Enable Voice Chat.  To hear the presentation, make sure that your sound is unmated and volume turned up.  Do NOT touch the talk button to avoid extraneous background noises during the presentation.

This program is brought to you by the AASL Web 2.0 Taskforce and the Chicago Public Schools Dept of Libraries.  I hope to see you in-world!

(SL newbies, be brave!  This is the perfect opportunity to dress up your avatar and get your SL feet wet!)

Will it be possible for someone to make a transcript of the session? I am unable to access second life due to my home and school computer setup.

Doug’s session in Second Life was informative and thought provoking. Thanks to the Web 2.0 taskforce for organizing this event. Hope to see more in the future.
