This Friday Find offers the opportunity to be a part of a historic “first” – the 2014 AASL Virtual Membership Meeting on Sunday, June 8. In the May 27th ALA News, AASL staff member Jennifer Habley provided the following information about this exciting event:

The American Association of School Librarians (AASL) will hold its first virtual membership meeting at 5 p.m. Central (6 p.m. Eastern, 4 p.m. Mountain, 3 p.m. Pacific) on Sunday, June 8. The annual membership meeting provides AASL members with a “state of the association” update via reports from AASL leadership. As the membership meeting requires no official vote of AASL membership, all members of the school library profession are invited to attend. RSVP at www.ala.org/aasl/vmm to receive an email with a link to the online meeting space.

During the event, AASL leadership will report out on AASL initiatives, programs, recognitions and financial standing. Speakers include:

  • Gail Dickinson, AASL president
  • Terri Grief, AASL president-elect
  • Susan Ballard, AASL past president
  • Karen Lemmons, AASL treasurer
  • Valerie Edwards, AASL representative to ALA Council
  • Catherine Evans, AASL executive committee member-at-large
  • Merlyn Miller, AASL Affiliate Assembly chair
  • Devona Pendergrass, AASL representative to the ALA Annual Conference committee
  • Sylvia Knight Norton, AASL executive director

During the 2014 elections, the AASL membership voted to amend the AASL Bylaws, changing the timing and presentation format of the annual membership meeting. Prior to the amendment, the membership meeting was a face-to-face event held during the ALA Annual Conference. This change in format will allow a greater number of the AASL members to attend, participate and stay up-to-date with their association. It will also allow all members of the profession to become informed on the work AASL undertakes as the only national professional membership organization focused solely on the needs of school librarians and the school library community.

As AASL will be purchasing the number of webinar seats needed to accommodate those members of the profession who wish to attend, AASL requests that only those who will attend during the live presentation register in advance. For those unable to attend during the live presentation, the meeting will be recorded and posted on the AASL website for view. AASL members will receive an email and AASL will publicize the recording’s availability through a press release and on its social media channels.

Share this information with other school librarians and encourage them to gain access to the meeting through an RSVP at www.ala.org/aasl/vmm . Then read next week’s Friday Find to hear an update of this historic event from the AASL leadership!
